'Private' trial game. Blues: Foulke, Mackie, Miller, Key, McRoberts, Robertson (Jacky), 'A Runner' (amateur), 'A N Other' (amateur), O'Hara, 'St Andrew' (amateur), Donaghy Reds: Byrne, Watson, McEwan, Craigie, 'Sotonite' (amateur), Wolfe, Kirwan, Windridge, Robertson (James), Copeland, Moran. The match was kicked off by director George Schomberg From various press reports around the time and from info from Robert Randall, the amateurs have been listed currently as follows: 'A Sotonite' = William Whiting. 'A Runner' = Walter Toomer 'St Andrew' = P. Phillips 'A N Other' = currently listed as Albert Slater as he 'figured well in the pre-season trials' (plural) in a later press report, though could be one of a few others who took part in some way in the pre-season preparations. From Robert Randall: "The identity of “A N Other” is not known to me; he is listed as an inside forward in the team line-up but according to the match report he must have started the game in the halfback line as Jacky Robertson played as a forward in the first half. This might give support to the theory that it was A V Slater who played for the reserves in the first half of the season exclusively as a halfback." |
