Steve is the brother of John Sherwood who won Olympic 400m Hurdles bronze medal in Mexico 1968, European silver 1969, and Commonwealth Games gold in 1970. He is also the son of George Sherwood, former Stockport County player (pre-war) & the uncle of British Davis Cup tennis player David.

He signed for Chelsea as an apprentice in August 1970 before turning professional in July 1971.
